Why do I have to cut my hair to grow it??

Cut and Grow

Most people can't make sense of hairdresser-speak when we say you have to cut your hair to grow it. Here's the dirty.

Trust me, we totally get it when you say you are growing your hair and you don't want to cut it. The best way to grow your hair out is the right way, slowly like losing weight. Basically, I have found three types of hairdressers when it comes to long hair; this has very little to do with skill, technique or scissors.

Those who Create
Those who Accommodate
and those who Compromise

Creators are artistically inspired and are typically your passionate, bubbly, hair lovers. We are the junkies that go to all of the hair shows, and become obsessed with all of the new trends, tools, and change. We get high on the adrenaline rush of spinning you around in the chair and saying "Surprise! What do you think?". Makeovers and clients that say 'Do whatever you want' make us smile in our sleep!
How does this relate to you and your long hair?

Sunshine Tips

Change your charge from negative to positive.

Some people call me Little Miss Sunshine because I always seem to dance from place to place.  I work in a busy hair salon and I get to smile at about 100 people a day on a slow day...  I may even be the one to make their day.  It’s not that I am happy all the time, but I truly wish happiness for everyone I come in contact with.  The best way I know to spread that is by contagiously smiling!

I love to smile.  I consider myself too young to have laugh lines but I will embrace each and every single one if they represent a happy year of my life or a happy day I brought to someone that reached out to me.

My life for the past 7 years has been a conscious expression ‘little things’ and exuding positive energy.  I am lucky enough to be surrounded by individuals that are so thirsty for inspiration and rays of light, that at times I leave work so weak from their insatiable ardor that I can barely walk.  I am happy to give it.  It will be how they remember me.

How do I know what condition my hair is in??

Know you hair condition...

Why is it important to know what condition your hair is in? Because just like skin types, each texture and fabric of hair has different needs. That's why there are so many products out there. Our hair is not one-size-fits-all.

Too much of a good thing is a bad thing:

Too much moisture can leave hair dull, lifeless, and limp. Not to mention oily scalp or acne that comes from hair that rubs against skin. How do I know if I have too much moisture? Fill a glass with water and put a strand of hair in it. If it floats (slightly submerged is OK), it has enough moisture. If it sinks, the hair is dry and thirsty. Add a moisture-rich conditioner or add a few drops of oil to the tattered ends.

Were you meant to have long hair?

Grow long hair because it’s beautiful, not because your man wants you to...

If you ask most men if they prefer long hair, they will say yes…but if you asked the same men if they prefer Barbie-figured women, high heels, or going commando, it’s the same answer.  We roll our eyes at the shallow visual images of what they find sexy, yet struggle daily with a style that is not our own.

Breakage Factor #3

Towel Turbans

I kept wondering why my baby hair around my temples and ears was still frazzled and broken even though I eliminated heat and tight or wet ponytails. I have a habit of dashing around on summer mornings with an after-shower turban. When I realized how much hair I didn't have to pick out of my 413 brush while combing out my tangles, I never wore a tight heavy towel twist over my hair ever again.

Best Hair of your Life

Written by Beth Whitfield on Tuesday, 31 August 2010. Posted in The Beth Whitfield Blog

Remember that old wives tale about brushing your hair 100 strokes to get it to grow and/or shine? Well its true. But only if you haven't washed your hair in about three weeks.
In Beauty School our clientele was 80% age 70+. I don't know why exactly these old ladies believe that showering erases your soul, but the point is, they are not washing their own hair. This generation was reared to brush the natural oils throughout their locks to keep them healthy and shiny. Scientific brushing has been taught in Beauty Schools for decades to keep this natural remedy alive.
